What Part of My Health Am I Improving?

Brain & Nervous System Health is your control and communication system. Explore cognition, memory, coordination, balance, reaction, sensory processing, neuroplasticity and the lifestyle factors that support brain health and everyday capability.

Why This Matters After 60

Healthy ageing is not about one number, one exercise or one food. This hub brings together the explanations, practical actions and evidence connected with Brain & Nervous System Health.

THE BIG PICTURE

Understanding Brain & Nervous System Health After 60

The brain and nervous system form the body's control and communication system. They support memory and thinking, coordinate movement, integrate sensory information, regulate many automatic functions and help you react when the environment changes.

Ageing can be accompanied by changes in processing speed, sensory function and aspects of cognition, but trajectories vary greatly between people. Healthy ageing is not defined by being identical to your younger self; the practical aim is to protect capacity, adapt where necessary and investigate changes that are unusual, rapid or functionally important.

Movement and Reaction

Walking, balance and trip recovery require sensory input, brain and spinal processing, peripheral nerves and muscular action to work together. This is why Brain & Nervous System Health connects directly with balance, power, mobility and physical independence.

Cognition and Neuroplasticity

The nervous system retains an ability to adapt with experience. Learning, physical activity and practice can drive changes in neural function, but 'neuroplasticity' should not be used as a promise that every age-related or neurological condition can be reversed.

What Can You Work On?

Physical activity, management of cardiovascular and metabolic risks, adequate sleep, social connection, mentally engaging activity and treatment of hearing, vision or other relevant health problems can all form part of a brain-health strategy. No single exercise, food or supplement has been shown to make someone immune to cognitive decline.

What Should You Measure?

Pay attention to function and change over time: memory that affects daily life, walking and balance, reaction, sleep, mood, hearing and vision can all provide useful context. Formal cognitive or neurological assessment belongs with appropriately qualified professionals when there is concern.

Do not normalise sudden change: Sudden weakness, facial droop, speech difficulty, severe new confusion or other possible stroke symptoms are emergencies and require urgent medical care.
