What Can I Work On?
Improve body composition while protecting muscle and health. Explore excess body fat, visceral fat, energy balance, dietary patterns, sarcopenic obesity and practical approaches to sustainable weight management after 60.
Healthy ageing is not about one number, one exercise or one food. This hub brings together the explanations, practical actions and evidence connected with Weight & Visceral Fat Management.
Use the resources below to understand the topic, connect it with the relevant parts of the OVER 60s QoL Guys system and identify useful next steps. Measurement should support better decisions — not simply collect numbers.
IMPROVE BODY COMPOSITION
For healthy ageing, body weight is not the whole story. The more useful aim is often to reduce excess body fat where appropriate while protecting muscle, strength, nutrition and physical capability. That is especially important after 60, when aggressive dieting can work against the very tissue you are trying to preserve.
Visceral fat stored within the abdominal cavity is associated with cardiometabolic risk. Waist measures can therefore add information that body weight or BMI alone may miss, although no single anthropometric measure provides a complete diagnosis.
Weight loss can include loss of lean tissue as well as fat. Resistance training, sufficient dietary protein and an appropriately sized energy deficit are therefore important considerations when weight reduction is suitable for an older adult.
Sustainable dietary patterns matter more than branded diet labels. Food quality, energy intake, protein, fibre, micronutrients and adherence all matter. Faster weight loss is not automatically better, and unintentional weight loss in later life is a different clinical issue from planned fat loss.
Useful trends can include body weight, waist circumference or waist-to-height ratio, strength and physical performance. The aim is to understand whether body composition and capability are moving in a healthier direction rather than chasing a single scale number.
The Whole Body Health Assessment helps you look across health, capability and daily behaviour so you can identify strengths, gaps and priorities.
