Building Good Habits After 60

Knowing what is healthy is not the same as repeatedly doing it. Building Good Habits is the Pillar that turns information into behaviour — creating routines and environments that make useful actions easier to start, repeat and maintain.

Make the Behaviour Specific

'Exercise more' is an intention. 'Walk for ten minutes after lunch on weekdays' is a behaviour that has a cue, an action and a context. Clear behaviours are easier to perform, track and adjust.

Consistency Beats Perfection

Habits are strengthened through repetition in a stable context, but real life is variable. A robust system anticipates disruption, uses achievable minimums and makes restarting quickly more important than maintaining an impossible perfect streak.

Use Your Environment

Cues, preparation, reduced friction, habit stacking, social support and accountability can all help behaviour happen more reliably. Motivation is useful, but a good system does not require you to feel highly motivated every day.

Connect Habits to Purpose

Behaviour becomes more meaningful when it serves something you value. For The OVER 60s QoL Guys, healthy habits are not an end in themselves — they are repeated investments in capability, independence and future choices.

What to Measure

Measure the behaviour before obsessing over the outcome. Training sessions completed, walks taken, planned meals followed or bedtime routines performed can reveal whether the system is working. Then review health and capability outcomes over a suitable time frame.
