IMPROVE MY HEALTH

Nutrition After 60

What Can I Work On?

Nutrition provides the raw materials for healthy ageing. Explore protein, fibre, fats, carbohydrates, micronutrients, hydration and nutrient-dense dietary patterns that support muscle, metabolic health, brain health and overall wellbeing.

Why This Matters After 60

Healthy ageing is not about one number, one exercise or one food. This hub brings together the explanations, practical actions and evidence connected with Nutrition.

Understand → Improve → Measure

Use the resources below to understand the topic, connect it with the relevant parts of the OVER 60s QoL Guys system and identify useful next steps. Measurement should support better decisions — not simply collect numbers.

SUPPLY THE RAW MATERIALS

Nutrition After 60

Nutrition provides energy and the raw materials needed to maintain muscle, bone, blood, enzymes, hormones, nervous-system function and countless cellular processes. Healthy ageing nutrition is therefore about adequacy and dietary pattern as well as calories.

Protein Matters — But So Does the Whole Diet

Protein supports muscle protein synthesis and maintenance, making adequate intake particularly relevant in later life. But protein does not replace vegetables, fruit, whole grains or other fibre-rich foods, healthy fats, micronutrients and adequate hydration.

Food First, Supplements Selectively

Supplements can be appropriate when there is a demonstrated need, inadequate intake or a specific clinical indication. They should not automatically be treated as superior to food, and 'natural' does not mean risk-free. Supplements can interact with medication and medical conditions.

Build a Pattern You Can Sustain

A useful eating pattern is nutrient-dense, supplies adequate protein and fibre, includes a variety of minimally processed foods and is realistic enough to maintain. Individual needs differ with body size, activity, health conditions, medication, appetite and goals.

What to Measure

Look beyond calories. Body-weight trends, waist measures, strength and capability, appetite, hydration and clinically indicated blood tests can all provide context. Dietary tracking can be useful temporarily, but precision should serve better decisions rather than become the goal itself.

Nutrition is not medical treatment: Kidney disease, swallowing problems, diabetes treatment, malnutrition, major gastrointestinal disease and other conditions can require individual dietary advice from an appropriately qualified professional.
