Research Summary
ICOPE describes a person-centred approach to assessing older people and responding to declines in their abilities. Its purpose is to connect assessment, practical support and ongoing care rather than treating each problem in isolation. The second edition supports health and care workers in primary care and community settings, with care pathways that can be adapted to local circumstances. It addresses intrinsic capacity, social support needs and the development of a personalised care plan. The pathway moves from an initial assessment to more detailed evaluation, planning, implementation and monitoring. This makes it particularly relevant to a programme focused on capability and independence. It is a professional care framework, not evidence that a website questionnaire can diagnose disease. The publication landing page and indexed description were reviewed here, rather than every page of the handbook.
Evidence and limitations: WHO practice guidance; not a trial
