Strength Training (for FUNCTIONAL Strength) After 60

What Can I Work On?

Build FUNCTIONAL Strength — strength you can actually use. Explore resistance training, progressive loading, muscle strength and the real-life movement capacity needed for standing, lifting, carrying, climbing and maintaining independence.

Why This Matters After 60

Healthy ageing is not about one number, one exercise or one food. This hub brings together the explanations, practical actions and evidence connected with Strength Training (for FUNCTIONAL Strength).

Understand → Improve → Measure

Use the resources below to understand the topic, connect it with the relevant parts of the OVER 60s QoL Guys system and identify useful next steps. Measurement should support better decisions — not simply collect numbers.

BUILD CAPABILITY

Strength Training for FUNCTIONAL Strength After 60

Strength is the capacity to generate force. The OVER 60s QoL Guys uses 'FUNCTIONAL Strength' as a programme term for strength that supports real-world capability — getting out of a chair, lifting, carrying, climbing, pushing, pulling and controlling your own body.

Why It Matters

Ageing is commonly accompanied by losses in muscle strength and muscle tissue, but decline is not uniform or inevitable in magnitude. Progressive resistance training is one of the best-supported interventions for improving muscular strength in older adults.

Progressive, Not Punishing

Muscle and the nervous system need a sufficient training stimulus followed by recovery. Progress can come from resistance, repetitions, range, control or task difficulty. More is not automatically better; the aim is enough challenge to adapt while managing fatigue, pain and risk.

Train Movements That Matter

A balanced programme can develop lower- and upper-body pushing and pulling, hip and knee extension, carrying, trunk control and other patterns relevant to everyday life. Machines, free weights, bands and body weight can all be useful when matched to the individual.

What to Measure

Track meaningful performance: resistance and repetitions performed with good technique, chair-rise ability, carrying capacity and other appropriate strength tests. Progress should ultimately improve capability, not merely the number written in a training log.

Safety Gate: Starting level should reflect capability, experience, symptoms, injury history, medical context and goals — not chronological age alone.
