Independence Reserve™

Build More Capacity Than Everyday Life Requires.

Your Independence Reserve is the functional buffer between what everyday life demands from you and the maximum capacity your body and brain can deliver. A larger buffer can make ordinary tasks easier and leave more capacity available when life asks for more.

Think Of Your Body Like A Bank Account

If you spend every cent you earn, an unexpected expense can leave you with no buffer. Physical and mental capacity work in a similar way: coping with an ordinary day does not always mean there is much left in reserve.

The chair, stairs or shopping bags may stay the same while your capacity changes. Building reserve means increasing the gap between what life asks of you and what you are capable of doing.

Percentage examples in the infographic illustrate this idea; they are not measured personal results or clinical thresholds.

Five Reserves That Work Together

Aerobic Reserve™ — Your Engine

The capacity of your heart, lungs and circulation to support activity. When walking, climbing stairs or travelling uses a smaller share of your available capacity, you have more left for additional demands.

Musculoskeletal Reserve™ — Strength For Life

Muscle, strength, bone capacity and functional ability help you rise from a chair, carry shopping and get up from the floor. The aim is to build capacity beyond what those everyday tasks require.

Power & Reaction Reserve™ — Move Fast When It Matters

Producing force quickly, reacting and coordinating movement matter when you stumble or need to adjust your footing. This is a different capability from strength alone.

Balance Reserve™ — Stay Steady, Stay Safe

Your eyes, inner ears, sensory nerves, brain and muscles work together to keep you steady. Reserve means having stability and control available for challenges such as uneven ground, turning and unexpected obstacles.

Cognitive Reserve™ — A Resilient Mind

Thinking, remembering, planning, learning and adapting support independent living. Cognitive reserve is an established concept; our framework brings attention to usable cognitive capability alongside physical capacity.

One Everyday Event. Several Systems.

Recovering from a stumble involves detecting the disturbance, processing information, reacting, moving a leg quickly and supporting your body. Balance, reaction, power and strength all contribute. Endurance supports your broader ability to keep functioning without excessive fatigue.

That is why independence cannot be understood through one fitness number. Strong legs, good endurance and reliable balance each matter, and a weakness in one area can still affect everyday capability.

Build Capacity For Tomorrow

Illness, injury or time spent inactive can reduce capacity. Someone who starts with a larger buffer may have more room before everyday tasks become difficult. The aim is practical: make normal life sit comfortably below your maximum, so you can continue travelling, spending time with family and doing the things you enjoy.

Our 10 Pillars connect the habits and training that support this aim. Guided 12 × 3 × 6 training is part of our approach to building physical capability, with movement quality and suitable progression at the centre.
